Digging Deeper into Shakeology

Shakeology's marketing tag line is "Your Daily Dose of Dense Nutrition". What exactly does that mean?

Well, firstly Shakeology is NOT a protein drink. It is so much greater than that. Yes, protein is part of the Shakeology ingredients but there is so much more. Shakeology is packed with 70 Super Foods.

Hold up. What exactly does "Super Foods" mean? If you google "Super Foods" countless articles immediately pop up from a variety of sources. I chose a reliable source in the American Heart Association and they state "Super Foods" is basically a marketing term, however, there are indeed some foods that are "super", meaning more nutritionally dense than other foods. However, eating one of two "super" foods on top of a poor diet does not magically make one healthy.

http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/HealthyLiving/HealthyEating/Nutrition/Whats-so-super-about-superfoods_UCM_457937_Article.jsp#.WzYeQ9JKiUk

Here's another article from a reliable magazine regarding Super Foods.
http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20475957,00.html#eggs-0

And another: https://www.womansday.com/food-recipes/food-drinks/tips/g2211/best-superfoods/

Last one: https://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/shopping-storing/food/superfoods#cacao-cocoa-powder

Wait, what?? You can't eat all these foods on a daily basis? You fear your grocery bill will sky rocket?? Ya, me too.

Check out this quick 2 minute marketing video that is funny and very educational from BeachBody which features one of their original Super Coaches, Tony Horton.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqjze4RboUU&app=desktop

The video is a bit dated as the number of Shakeology flavors has tremendously expanded, but the information about the ingredients holds true.

So which Super Foods are in Shakeology? The latest count is 70, yes 7-0, super foods!

The Premium Protein and Amino Acids - Whey, Pea, Chia, Quinoa, Flax, Sacha Inchi, Rice, and Oat Protein
Antioxidants and Super-Fruits - Caco, Whole Coffee Fruit, Camu-Camu, Acerola Cherry, Bilberry, Lycium Berry (Goji Berry), Green Tea, Luo Han Guo, Pomeegranate, Rose Hips, Vitamins A, C, and E
Phytonutrients and Super-Greens- Moringa, Matcha, Chloreela, Spinach, Kale
Adaptogenic Herbs and Botanicals- Ashwagandha, Astragalus, Cordyceps, Maca, Maitake, Reishi, Schisandra, Chaga
Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Fiber - Yacon Root, Chicory Root, Bacillus Coagulans
Digestive Enzymes - Amylase, Cellulase, Lactase, Glucomylase, Alpha-Galactosidase, Invertase
Vitamins and Minerals - A, B6, B12, C, D,E,K2, Biotin, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Sodium, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Folate, Chromium, Phosphorus, Iodine, Iron

Holy Wow! That is a lot of Super Foods! Imagine trying to buy each of these Super Foods and then trying to consume them on a daily basis! Your grocery bill would be ridiculously high and you would be eating all day long!

Ok, so what ingredients are NOT in Shakeology? Artificial sweeteners, Artificial flavors, Artificial stimulants, Artificial colors, soy, or high fructose corn syrup. Yup, all the no-no's are NOT in Shakeology.

Well hot damn! So I can can get in all these super foods without the no-no's in one scoop of Shakeology? Wow!! Well, or you could take 5 trips through a totally amazing salad bar. There's that option.

What does drinking Shakeology every day do to one's body? Essentially three things. You ready?
1. Build Immune system
2. Reduces Inflammation (#1 cause of disease is internal inflammation)
3. Repairs GI Tract by making one more regular, digesting the food better, and absorbing the nutrients better
That all sounds pretty impressive and remarkable to me!!

The second myth about Shakeology is that it is a weight loss shake. No, it is not. It is a Super Food shake. Did you gain extra weight from one burger? No. You gained extra weight from many, many burgers. Will you lose weight from drinking one Shakeology? No. You need to add Shakeology into your daily diet. This needs to be a life-style change. Will starting your day off drinking a Super Food shake help you on your weight loss journey? Yes!! But once you hit your weight loss goal, you will still want to drink Shakeology every day!

Who should be drinking a Shakeology?
Everyone, but more specifically:

Are you wanting to simplify your meal plan? Shakeology is for you!

Are you older and active and think the taste of Ensure or Boost is unpleasant? Replace it with Shakeology!

Are you a busy parent who doesn't have the time to sit down for a healthy breakfast? Shakeology takes a little time to make and you can drink it as you get the kids ready in the morning!

Are you a busy student or professional who is racing to get out the door? Drink a Shakeology!

Are you already a super fit person who knows all about healthy foods? Then Shakology is right up your ally!

Are you a picky-eater or know someone who is? Get in all the nutrients you need through a delicious Shakeology!

Do you choose to skip breakfast? Studies show people who eat a healthy breakfast are leaner, have more energy, have fewer sugar cravings, eat less snacks throughout the day, and have a faster metabolism so drinking a Shakeology is quick and easier AND starts your day off with a bang!

What are the Shakeology flavors?
30-Day Bag or 24 Box of Single-Serve Packets

Whey: Chocolate, Cafe' Latte, Vanilla, Strawberry, and Greenberry
Vegan: Chocolate Vegan, Cafe' Latte Vegan, Vanilla Vegan, Tropical Strawberry Vega,

There are pros and con's to getting either the 30 day bag or 24 box of single servings. The price is the same, however is you like have a variety of flavors or travel a lot, the 24 box is the same to go.

Alright Liz, you have convinced me that replacing a meal with Shakeology is the smartest bet for my health, now what is the cost? The cost of a 30-day bag or 24-day single-serve packets is $129! Pretty much a steal based upon the quality and quantity ingredients you are getting! Thinking "ouch, that's still a bit high"? No worries, sign up to be a BeachBody coach for $17 a month and you'll receive a 25% discount on ALL product, making your Shakeology's $100 a month! Get three friends signed up too and your commissions pay for your bag! Military? There's a military discount that waives the $17 monthly business fee! Pretty sweet deal all around!

The biggest takeaway from this post? The marketing tagline is correct! Shakeology is truly a daily dose of dense nutrition that should be added to your daily diet as a lifestyle change to help build your immunity, lessen internal inflammation, repair your GI trait, all the while, increasing your energy and decreasing your junk food cravings!

Strong and Courageous Woman: Julia Child

"Find something you're passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it" - Julia Child

I was inspired to select Julia Child as my Strong and Courageous Woman of the week as it's this month's Girls Can Crate! The more I learn about Julia the more impressive she becomes to me! I mean, she was impressively tall at 6'2" and it appeared her personality could barely be contained! She was smart and witty and seemed quite sure of who she was as a human being!

https://www.girlscancrate.com/

Of course all of Julia Child's cookbooks are available on Amazon and I found two children's book about her.

Essential Oils 101: Arborvitae "Tree of Life"

Want to learn more? my.doterra.com/thephelanphamily and
https://www.facebook.com/Living-Well-with-Liz-368112693697193/

 Arborvitae Thuja plicata

With natural preservation properties, essential oil from the native Canadian Arborvitae tree acts as a powerful cleansing and purifying agent, while providing a warm, earthy aroma.

Description

Known as the “tree of life,” Arborvitae is majestic in size and abundant in unique benefits. Our arborvitae essential oil is sourced from the heartwood of the Thuja plicata tree. It is also known as Western Red Cedar and is native to North America (primarily Canada and the Northwestern United States). This unique source of arborvitae essential oil contains a distinct chemical profile and is uniquely concentrated in methyl thujate. The sourcing arrangements for this oil are done in an innovative, environmentally-responsible way through distillation of residual wood materials to ensure no trees are unnecessarily harvested for production. Native to Canada, all parts of the Arborvitae tree were used extensively by Native Americans for health benefits and for building vessels, totem poles, baskets, and clothing. Because of its natural preserving properties, Arborvitae prevents wood from rotting, which makes it popular in woodcraft and for preserving natural wood surfaces.

Uses

  • Add a few drops to a spray bottle with water and spray on surfaces or hands for a quick DIY cleaner.
  • Apply to wrists and ankles while hiking.
  • Diffuse to purify the air and to repel insects inside the home.
  • Mix 4 drops of Arborvitae essential oil and 2 drops of Lemon essential oil for a natural wood preservative and polish.
  • Use during meditation for a sense of peace and calm.

Directions for Use

Diffusion: Use three to four drops in the diffuser of your choice.
Topical use: Apply one to two drops to desired area. Dilute with doTERRA Fractionated Coconut Oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.

Cautions

Possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.

Girl Scout Law - Responsible for What I Say and Do

Previously, I've discussed what I have done as a Girl Scout Leader to teach my Daisy's the Girl Scout Promise, and four pieces of the Girl Scout Law: Honest and Fair, Friendly and Helpful, Considerate and Caring, and Courageous and Strong

This week, I will share what I have done for Responsible for what I say and do.

The big concept for the girls to understand for this petal is one most humans struggle with: I am responsible for what I say and do. I control myself. I cannot control anyone else. It's a pretty significant idea for most people, much less 5 and 6 year olds.

Responsible for what I what and do is all around being a responsible person. One year, the troop bought canvas bags for the girls to decorate and hold their binders I created for them. Creating a chore chart for the girls to follow is another idea. Setting a schedule to follow in the morning to prepare for the school day is another activity. As always, Pinterest is your friend when it comes to ideas for this petal or any Girl Scout badge.

I only found one book that tied in nicely with this petal. If there are other books that you have used, I would love for you to share that information.  "My Mouth is a Volcano" may work nicely as well. I tied that book to the Respect Myself and Others petal.

As with all the petals, I consider it success if the girl can give me an appropriate example of what it means to be "responsible for what I say and do". The Girl Scout Law will be repeated at every meeting so the girls will hear it and learn it throughout their time in Girl Scouts.

June: Alzheimer's Awareness Month

So it may be a weird picture to start out my blog post, but these are my Daddy's slippers and I love them. I love wearing them. They are soft and comfortable and furry and most importantly, wearing these slippers reminds me of him and makes me feel physically closer to him. Whenever I am shuffling about the house wearing the slippers, as they are a smidge too big for me, I am reminded of Wally. Therefore, these L.L.Bean slippers are priceless to me. I pray they never wear out.

I heard on the radio today that June is Alzheimer's Awareness month and I feel kind of cheated finding out now. So I apologize for being late to the game to tell you!

The Alzheimer's Awareness website has a plethora of information and resources and I encourage you to explore the site if you are seeking more information.

https://www.alz.org/

That's all I really have for today. Check out the site. Wear Purple to promote Alzheimer's Awareness. My one caretakers tip of the day, which I need to remember for myself, is that when Alzheimer's steals your loved ones memories and everything is brand new to them, whether it's a favorite food or a favorite person, please be kind and patient. I promise your loved one isn't trying to be a jerk or aggravate you. This is just their new world. You can either choose to join them in their new world or you can sit on the sidelines being pissed. And I feel you because there are days I do both.

Stunt Ranch

My super awesome Girl Scout co-leader planned a fun -filled adventure at the Stunt Ranch for our girls! We weren't vying for any badges but ALL the girls certainly showcased they were strong and courageous time and time again!

http://www.stuntranch.com/

The Stunt Ranch also has been partnering with Alamo Drafthouse to show movies. Jon and my brother-in-law and sister friend recently saw Iron Man there.

We paid for the girls (and some mom's) to play in the inflatable ball thingy, the obstacle course (which was quite challenging), the zip line, and the high fall zero impact stuntman airbag!! They ended our morning with a grand finale explosion!

What is ever more exciting is there is still SO MUCH LEFT TO DO!! We can come back next summer and do even more activities!!

I highly recommend this place for your Girl Scout troop, parties, corporate events, etc. It appears they have packages for every occasion and group!

Sunday Funday - Blue Hole In Georgetown

Blue Hole in Georgetown is one of my favorite places in the Austin area and Caroline's most favorite place, so for the second year in a row, we have started our Summer vacation there!

The water level was lower than in the past (we are in a bit of a drought), but the girls still were able to catch plenty of minnows with their fishing nets. The little man-made slide provide relief and me and one of my bestie's were able to stay cool by putting our low chairs in the water.

I love Blue Hole because it is free, there are flushing toilets (always, always a plus), and you can explore the San Gabriel River for quite a ways separate from the area people are swimming. The parking is generally ample and some days, families will bring tents and grills and it smells delicious and sounds amazing!

B4 LIIFT4

The slogan for LIIFT4 is " Lift, HIIT, Rest, and Repeat" and I gotta say, I LOVE it!

The program is 4 days of 30-40 minutes of weight lifting, HIIT cardio, and ab work outs. The other 3 days are for rest and recovery. Of course, you can and should be active, but the activity and the intensity is solely up to you!

I enrolled into the LIIFT4 program on June 11th and have completed two weeks of the B4 LIIFT4 workouts which have been four 20 minute workouts. The B4 workouts have given me a great introduction to the LIIFT4 workout program which officially launches on July 16th. The program launches to ALL BeachBody on Demand customers October 1st. There is an additional cost if you would like to begin the program before October 1st.

The LIIFT4 workout program will also include two recovery day programs, the LIIFT4 Stretch and LIIFT4 roll and recover.

LIIFT4 does offer meal plan guidance which incorporates Shakeology and the Performance line products. The meal plan does offer one cheat day a week. Of course, don't go too crazy or you will un-do all of your hard earned efforts!

A meal planner guide providing guidance on the meals, portions, suggested foods, and a few recipes is included.

So far I am just thrilled with this program and am very excited to begin the complete program on July 16th! This is an excellent program for those of you who enjoy weight lifting and HIIT cardio! Also, it's only 4 days a week! So if the other programs that are 7 days a week and have an intense and restrictive meal plan intimidates you, like it does me, this is the program for you!

Strong and Courageous Woman: Irena Sendler

"Heroes do extraordinary things. What I did was not an extraordinary thing. It was normal." - Irena Sendler

With all that is going on in the world, I felt Irena Sendler was a most appropriate choice for my Strong and Courageous woman of the week.

I don't know if I first learned about Irena via one of the amazing Girls Can Crate boxes or from a "Goodnight Rebel Girls" stories but her strength and courage BLEW ME AWAY!! Basically Irena risked her life every day by going in to the Warsaw ghetto to sneak out Jewish babies!!!! Her story is absolutely, amazingly beautiful!

Girl Scout Law - Courageous and Strong

Previously, I've discussed what I have done as a Girl Scout Leader to teach my Daisy's the Girl Scout Promise, and three pieces of the Girl Scout Law: Honest and Fair, Friendly and Helpful, and Considerate and Caring.

This week, I will share what I have done for Courageous and Strong and oh my heavens, Courageous and Strong is such a fun petal to earn!

Dressing up as a Super Hero is a great activity for Strong and Courageous girls!

Practicing yoga poses is definitely showing strength and courage! As a multi-level troop, I try my best to incorporate all levels of badges and patches throughout the school year so we have done yoga for this petal and other physical activity badges as well. Some of my older girls struggle with the confidence to try the yoga poses so doing yoga definitely reinforces having "strength and courage".

Playing Bean Boozle with the girls is super fun and is a great example of showing strength and courage!

There are countless books to read! My all-time favorite is "Stand Tall, Molly Lou Mellon"! I just love this little girls spunk!

As with all the petals, I firmly believe you can accomplish earning it in one meeting. There are numerous coloring sheets you can incorporate to educate the girls on the petals and as a time filler.

If the girl can provide an example of "Courageous and Strong", I believe she has earned the petal. The Girl Scout Law will be repeated at every meeting so the girls will have ample opportunity to learn the meaning.

Often called the “king of oils,” Frankincense promotes feelings of peace and overall wellness when used aromatically, while topical and internal uses provide modern health benefits.*

Description

Renowned as one of the most prized and precious essential oils, Frankincense has extraordinary health benefits.* In addition to its notoriety in the New Testament, the Babylonians and Assyrians would burn Frankincense in religious ceremonies and the ancient Egyptians used Frankincense resin for everything from perfume to salves for soothing skin. This centuries-old knowledge contributes to the modern uses of Frankincense today. It’s soothing and beautifying properties are used to rejuvenate skin and help reduce the appearance of imperfections when applied topically. As the king of oils, Frankincense is known to support healthy cellular function when used internally.* When inhaled or diffused, Frankincense promotes feelings of peace, relaxation, satisfaction, and overall wellness.

Uses

  • Rub Frankincense on your hands after a long day of gardening for a warming and soothing effect.
  • Apply topically to help reduce the appearance of skin imperfections.
  • Can be applied to the bottoms of feet to promote feelings of relaxation and to balance mood.

Girl Scout Law - Considerate and Caring

Previously, I've discussed what I have done as a Girl Scout Leader to teach my Daisy's the Girl Scout Promise, and two pieces of the Girl Scout Law: Honest and Fair and Friendly and Helpful. This week, I will share what I have done for Considerate and Caring.

Considerate and Caring is a fun part of the Girl Scout Law to teach the Daisy's. There are so many activities one can do and books you can read to them to reinforce this part of the Law.

One year I read "Have You Filled my Bucket Today" and we talked about all the ways in which one can either fill or dip another person's bucket. In fact, one meeting this year, the girls were quite out of hand and not being respectful and I just happened to have this book in my bag so I stopped what we were doing and read this book. I had real-time examples of ways to fill and dip one's bucket!

The after school center we use for meetings actually has a wall dedicated to pictures of the after school kids and little buckets so people can leave messages with their friends! This would be a wonderful idea to replicate for your troop!

Another year I read "The Kindness Quilt" and then the girls created their own little quilt patches that showed examples in which they had been kind to others!

As a multi-level troop, I cannot devote full meetings to Daisy petals so I will host Daisy Days at my house. This year the activity I did to teach Considerate and Caring I borrowed from one of the Girl Scout Facebook groups I am on.  Some of my parents and I wrote adjectives on a post-it notes on a poster board. Some examples were lines from the law, Strong, courageous, friendly, and helpful, with other positive adjectives, such as funny and creative. The girls had their own pieces of paper and we had them choose two adjectives for themselves. They then chose one adjective for each Girl Scout sister. Then I as the leader choose an adjective for each girl. The goal is to teach kindness and being supportive of others. Some of the girls were surprised with the adjectives others gave them.

The field trips that I shared last week for Friendly and Helpful could certainly apply to Considerate and Caring. Visiting a Senior Center or animal shelter definitely qualifies being considerate and caring as does making cards for others. A wonderful organization for making cards is color a smile.

www.colorasmile.org

Considerate and Caring is definitely one of the "easier" petals to teach your troop! If ever in doubt, I encourage you to peruse Pinterest as there is a wealth of information out on that site!

Picture this Clothing - Cookie Incentive

I don't recall where I discovered the Picture this Clothing site but I have been sitting on it for well over a year!

For $50, you or your child or whomever you want can create an unique, there ain't no one else in the world has, priceless T-shirt or Dress! $50!!! For something only your child (or you) has created! JUST YOU!! I just LOVE it!!

As a cookie sales incentive my co-leader and I offered this opportunity to the troop and more than half were able to participate.

So the process! Step one, download the template for your person to decorate however they see fit. I printed multiple copies for each girl, because, well, things happen in the creative process.

Step Two, take a picture of the completed piece of art (NO SCANNING) and upload it to the site.

Step Three, the company provides an estimated 30 day processing time, but we received ours much sooner.

One of the pictures was not to their liking (not the quality of the art itself but the quality of the picture) and they emailed and texted me for assistance. Once they received an appropriate sized picture, the shirts were printed and shipped.

The company does state the shirts run small and to select one size up. I did try to go two sizes up as I wanted the girls to grow into the shirts for more wears. Well, the company is correct in that the shirts run small. So maybe go THREE sizes larger??

The t-shirts were all individually packaged in tissue paper with a little toy, sticker, and coupon.

Though the shirts are smaller than I had hoped, they are SUPER SOFT!!
Look at the pride of wearing her very own creation!! I mean really?? What a spectacular gift!!

The T-shirt has the same picture in the front as in the back.

It was awesome to watch the girls create their very own shirt!

Everyone created something totally different and unique to them!

I can definitely see doing this project again!
